GPSD GM endorses Lemon Grove Bird Initiative, Drop the JNF Campaign, & GKN Out Campaign

On September 26, 2026, at the Green Party of San Diego County General Membership Meeting, the General Membership endorsed:

MEASURE E: Lemon Grove Bird Initiative

WHAT MEASURE E DOES:
Measure E prohibits retail pet stores in Lemon Grove from selling birds unless they come from an animal shelter, humane society, or nonprofit rescue organization. Poultry sold for agricultural purposes is exempt. Stores can still offer birds for adoption in partnership with rescues and can keep selling food, cages, and supplies.

See informational handouts here and here.

WHY SAN DIEGO GREENS SUPPORT IT:
It reflects our values.
Parrots and other pet store birds are wild animals, not domesticated ones. Commercial breeding and sale treats them as merchandise, and many end up surrendered to rescues that are already full. Respect for the living world and for the animals we share it with is at the core of what Greens stand for.

It came from grassroots organizing. Measure E is on the ballot because Lemon Grove residents put it there. Volunteers and petitioners gathered more than 2,600 signatures, well beyond the number required to qualify. This is direct democracy working the way it should.

It favors adoption over commerce. California already requires pet stores to source dogs, cats, and rabbits from shelters and rescues. Measure E extends that same common-sense standard to birds, so that homeless birds find homes before more are bred for sale.

It has trusted local support. Measure E is endorsed by the San Diego Humane Society, which signed the official ballot argument in favor, and by the Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC), a San Diego nonprofit that rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes parrots. The people who care for surrendered birds every day are asking us to vote yes.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. Vote YES on Measure E and return your ballot by November 3.
2. Forward this information to friends, family, and neighbors in Lemon Grove.
3. Talk about it. Local measures are often decided by small margins, and a personal recommendation goes a long way.
