March and Rally

March 15, 2008, 12 noon
Fairmont and University, City Heights, San Diego

Five years ago, the US military was preparing the imminent invasion of Iraq.  After five years, the war and occupation continue, with the deaths of close to 4,000 US troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.  An estimated four million Iraqis are internal or external refugees.  The direct costs of the war approach $500 billion, and the total estimated costs are over $2 trillion.  Thousands of veterans come home wounded and are unable to get decent care.  At home, adequate healthcare is only a dream for millions.  And as we enter into an economic recession with rising unemployment and home foreclosures, Bush has proposed the largest military budget since the Second World War.

March 15-22 will be a worldwide week of protests against the Iraq war and occupation.  In Washington DC, Iraq Veterans against the War (IVAW) will be holding Winter Soldier hearings, where Iraq and Afghan vets will testify to what is really happening on the ground in those countries.

In San Diego, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice (SDCPJ), along with other organizations (listed below), is calling for a march and rally on March 15, starting at 12 noon, at Fairmont and University, in City Heights.

Regardless of who is elected in November, if there is no visible protest on the streets, this awful war and occupation will drag on endlessly.  We need all the help that we can get, in order to make this event a success.  Here are some things that you can do:

-Endorse the event.  If you are a member of a trade union, social, political, or other organization, get your organization to endorse the event and participate actively.  Send your endorsements to aka0001@hotmail.com, sdpeaceguy@gmail.com, or activist@cox.net.

-Stay informed. Updated information about the march and rally is available on the SDCPJ website.

-Spread the word.  Pass along information about the march and rally to friends, co-workers, and fellow students. Forward this email.  Post it on MySpace and Facebook. Flyers (both color and grayscale) can be downloaded from the SDCPJ website. Reprint the flyers, hand them out, or leave them in locations where people can pick them up, like coffee houses or worksite mailstops.
Help us organize.

We will be meeting every Monday night at 7 pm from now until March 15 at the Church of the Brethren, 3850 Westgate Place, San Diego.

Be there on March 15.  Bring your own signs and banners.  Large visible protests help spread the word that most of us oppose the war. We want the troops out now.
