The Green Party continues to support Occupy San Diego, October 14,  2011 -

Join the movement that is sweeping the country. The top 1% of our nation control nearly half the wealth in this country, while the top 20% control a stunning 80% of it. This lopsided distribution of wealth, coupled with outsourcing of jobs, bailouts, secret loans, subsidies, and profiteering in the financial sector have resulted in massive foreclosures, retirement and investment fiduciary failure, job losses, homelessness and environmental disaster. We, the American citizens, must reclaim our country and put ourselves on the line for peace and justice. It is time for us to discover both who we — the other 99% — are and what we believe and want. Now is the time for us to act.

Civic Center Plaza (near B St & 3rd downtown, by City Hall – you can take the blue or orange trolley to civic center station). Please join us! Bring signs!

A San Diego Green Party press statement in support of the Occupy San Diego & Occupy Together movements is below:

San Diego, CA – 10/5/2011: The Green Party of San Diego (GPSD) stands in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City; the upcoming October 6th Protest in Freedom Plaza in Washington DC; and, all the other on-going Occupation protests in the United States. We especially support the Occupy San Diego protest, which will begin Friday, October 7th at Children’s Park (Front Street and Island Avenue) at 4 pm, and proceed to the Civic Center Plaza, next to City Hall (1200 3rd Avenue).

“Corporate money and influence has led to a political system with skewed priorities and values. The crises of unemployment, health care, housing, and the environment, and our unjustified wars, can all be traced back to this.” David Morrison, GPSD co-chairperson.

“The Republican and Democratic leadership like the status quo. It works for them and for 1% of the nation. The Green Party objects to the status quo. We want what’s best for the remaining 99% of us.” Maggie Kennedy, GPSD co-chairperson.

We stand for the following:

1. An end to corporate personhood
2. Campaign finance reform, including public financing of elections
3. Shutting the revolving door between high-level government posts and the private sector
4. Raising taxes on the wealthy, having them pay their fair share
5. Ending corporate tax loopholes, including the moving of headquarters and income allocation overseas
6. Federal funding to end public sector layoffs and put people to work in jobs that lead to energy independence and improved healthcare, education, environment, and infrastructure.

The Green Party platform consists of Ten Key Values which were declared at the party’s founding

Restore the Bill of Rights — Repeal NDAA
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012 has provisions that would allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens without any recourse to legal intervention or civil rights. These provisions mean that any one of us—or any group of us—could be imprisoned without arraignment, without access to a lawyer, without access to habeas corpus, without a jury trial, and without the protection of the Bill of Rights, our basic, fundamental rights as citizens. These detentions can occur at the whim of the President. The President doesn’t have to provide any evidence, testimony or proof whatsoever; there is no judicial or Congressional oversight or review; and there is no requirement even to acknowledge that a person has been detained. The detention can last as long as the detainee’s life allows—however short that might be. Around the world, this despised and fearsome procedure is known as “disappearing” and is the weapon of choice of tyrants, despots and dictators against their own citizens. Victims are usually those people who are seen to challenge the government or the wealthy. Our Congress has now granted the President this power— to disappear U.S. citizens and use the armed forces to do so—at any time against any American citizen anywhere on American soil and for whatever reason. And nothing needs to be justified, explained or acknowledged! Join us in demonstrating against both political parties, as half the Democrats and almost all Republicans voted for passage of the NDAA, which was signed into law by President Obama. We are initially planning two protests:

When: Saturday, February 11 at noon

Where: California Democratic Party Meeting at the Convention Center. Meet at Children’s Park (1st Ave. and Island) with banners, signs and flags and wearing orange clothing or armbands.

Come join the San Diego Green Party on our mostly monthly movie night to learn about our home, the earth.

Synopsis: The expression "common as dirt" wouldn't exist if there weren't an awful lot of dirt in this world. But is there as much as we think -- or even as much as we need? And what's been happening to it? Dirt is the outer layer of the Earth and the place where nearly all the world's vegetation comes to life, but the 20th Century was a bad time for dirt -- the rise of corporate farming practices have led to reliance of fertilizers with negative long-term effects on the soil, while clear-cutting of rainforests and global warming are making it harder to grow the food the world needs, making workable soil an increasingly scarce commodity. Filmmakers Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow offer a witty but incisive look at dirt, what's in it, how it's used and how we must protect it in the documentary Dirt! The Movie. Adapted in part from the book Dirt! The Ecstatic Skin of Earth by William Bryant Logan, Dirt! The Movie received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

When: Sat. February 11, 2012,  7:00 PM

Where: Bob Dennis' home (please contact Hugh at hmpeace1@yahoo.com  for address/map).

IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THE RULES!
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling is just the latest - and most blatant - example
that corporations have hijacked our government. The ruling opens the door to a floodgate
of corporate money in elections and leaves ordinary citizens little opportunity to participate
in our democracy. Corporations are using OUR legal system against us!

Join David Cobb from Move to Amend for an action meeting to
determine our community’s response to the Supreme Court and what
we can do to join the national movement to Abolish Corporate Personhood!

Plan to Attend Our Event to Hear National MOVE TO AMEND Spokesman, David Cobb
February 27, 2012
Oceanside Public Library - 330 North Coast Highway Oceanside, CA

Its our next monthly movie and we're going to watch more  than one. “The Story of Broke” to start with at 7:00 PM on Saturday Mar. 10th at Bob’s home (please contact Hugh Moore at hmpeace1@yahoo.com or 619 793 5397 for the address).

For those of you who haven’t heard of the movie “The Story of Broke” is part of a series which started with “The Story of Stuff.” The “Story of Stuff” is an animated short film about the need for our county to move from a consumption model economy to a service model economy and the “Story of Broke” is the next short film in the series which tells us how the government perpetuates the consumption model economy and how to move beyond that malfunctioning model.

Each of the animated films is very short (about 10 minutes). So if someone at the party has not seen the “Story of Stuff” we may all agree to show it first and then watch “The Story of Broke.”  After that there will be time for discussion and if we like we can watch another of the project’s movies if we want to. Here’s the list of films:

· The Story of Broke

· The Story of Electronics

· The Story of Citizens United v. FEC

· The Story of Cosmetics

· The Story of Bottled Water

· The Story of Cap & Trade

· The Story of Stuff

They are all good (at least the 4 of them that I have seen) but we will not be able to watch them all because we have to save some time  to talk about the upcoming June Primary election. There are 3 candidates who  have asked for the San Diego County Green Party endorsement for their campaign.

Lori Saldana, Democrat, US Congressional Candidate 52nd District

Dick Eiden, Independent, US Congressional Candidate 49th District

David Secor, Democrat, US Congressional Candidate 50th District

Mr. Eiden and Mr. Secor have both returned our candidate questionnaire and you can see them at: https://docs.google.com/?tab=co&authuser=0&pli=1#folders/0B03xnW0YcLASYTE1ZGRmZWEtNjdiZi00OGNjLWI5ZTktYWY5YjNlMjBmNGYw

Ms. Saldana requested our endorsement but did not return the questionnaire as of this date. We need to have a short discussion to determine if we want to give any of them the local Green Party endorsement.

Hope everyone can make it
