San Diego Canyonlands logoStevenson Canyon in Clairemont is a beautiful urban canyon with lots of habitat for wildlife. San Diego Canyonlands (formerly Sierra Club) has been removing invasive plants, mostly palm fronds, which block and erode the streambed through the canyon, preventing normal flow of water out towards the bay and creating a fire hazard. Invasives are also a problem because they replace native plants which provide food and shelter for birds and other wildlife.

For this event, make sure to wear long pants, sturdy closed shoes, gardening gloves and long sleeves if possible.

I Love a Clean San Diego logoThis is part of the 25th annual California Coastal Cleanup, which started out just cleaning up beaches but now does 80-90% of its efforts inland, since tracing where the trash and blockages occur is one of the best ways to insure clean and healthy coastal areas. The California Coastal Cleanup is part of a worldwide effort which last year had a total of 400,000 volunteers! There are over seventy sites in San Diego county alone. I Love a Clean San Diego, which coordinates the overall effort, has provided water, some snacks, and free giveaways.
